As a centre of excellence for the mobility sector, we are committed to innovation in research, technology and education – it underpins everything we do. As part of this, we're delighted to announce that our prototype for a new beach wheelchair, designed in collaboration with Falmouth University and built in our Workshops, has been deployed on Cornish beaches for trial by users as part of our pre-manufacture process.
Beach wheelchairs are designed for outdoor use and have large inflatable wheels which allow them to roll over sand and pebbles with remarkable ease giving a comfortable and safe ride. This has allowed people with a disability or mobility challenge the pleasure and freedom to access and enjoy Cornwall’s beaches where they may have found it more difficult in the past.
The new chair is available to hire, free of charge, at the following locations:
- Fistral beach, Newquay
- Perranporth Gardens Charities, Perranporth beach
- Riviere Sands Holiday Park, Hayle
- St Michael's Mount, Marazion, and
- Seaton Beach Cafe, Seaton beach, Looe
Our other beach wheelchairs are still available to hire on beaches around Cornwall - please see the map below which can also be downloaded by clicking the 'Beach Wheelchair Hire' link at the bottom of the page.
